Witton Lodge Community Association has launched  Break the Habit – a free stop smoking programme designed to support your individual needs.

Available to smokers from across Erdington and Sutton Coldfield, it’s simple to register to join the programme and enjoy support for a period of up to six-weeks. You can choose their own quit date and will be guided to successfully achieve it through the programme’s bespoke health and lifestyle options.

At Witton Lodge, we know that quitting isn’t easy, but are confident with the support of Break The Habit – that it can be done. Here’s some tips to help you on your way…

Cravings

Nicotine has a very sneaky way of convincing the brain that in any situation – that morning coffee, the traffic jam on the way to work, awkward small talk with someone you don’t really like – can only be improved with a cigarette.

Cravings don’t knock politely; they often kick the door in. So how do you keep them at bay? It might sound very simple and obvious, but distraction really works. Gum, mints, even carrot sticks, can outsmart the craving long enough for it to fade.

Mood Swings

Without nicotine, some people’s emotions will ride a rollercoaster.  One moment they’re all sunshine and rainbows, the next, they’re under a dark rain cloud. The trick here is movement. Go for a walk, do an exercise routine, put some music on in the living room and dance like nobody’s watching. Endorphins are nature’s mood stabiliser so get moving.

Rituals

Smoking isn’t just about nicotine; it’s tied to habits. A cigarette after meals, at social functions or while you’re waiting for the bus becomes automated.  Breaking these rituals can feel like forgetting lines to your favourite song. So how can you break the habit?  Replace the action of smoking with something new. Instead of reaching for your ciggies, reach for a snack, or get on your mobile phone and message a friend or loved. Small routines can fill the ‘gap’ without lighting up.

Fear of Failure

When it comes to quitting, sometimes the biggest hurdle people struggle to get over is that little voice whispering, You’ve tried this before and failed so you’ll fail again. But remember, quitting smoking isn’t passing or failing an exam. It’s a process, and with each attempt you will strengthen your resolve to get over the finishing line. Slipping up along the way there doesn’t mean you’ve failed or you’re a failure. Every cigarette you don’t have is a victory.

In the end, quitting smoking is less about perfection and more about persistence. The cravings get weaker; the moods balance out and the new routines take root. The journey may be full of challenges but each one that you overcome is proof that freedom from cigarettes and all the benefits that has, is not just possible, it’s waiting for you.
