Helping You Take Control of Diabetes
A hugely positive public response to a series of diabetes workshops in Erdington has prompted Witton Lodge Community Association to repeat the dose in Perry Common.
Reversing Diabetes ran for eight weeks at Erdington Library with health and wellbeing officers from Witton Lodge, in partnership with Seventh-Day Adventist Church, delivering advice and guidance on managing and controlling the condition.
With research estimating that 33% of children born after 2002 will die before their parents because of Type 2 diabetes, the workshops really struck a chord with residents who packed into the weekly sessions.
As a result, a second serving of Reversing Diabetes will take place at Perry Common Community Hall, starting on Wednesday, September 4th.
“A lot of people around Perry Common and across the North of Birmingham have expressed growing concerns over diabetes,” said Wellbeing Officer, Fauzia Begum.
“We have been getting a lot of comments and questions from people about what they can do to preventing the condition as well as manage it.
“These sessions explore that with a focus on diet and lifestyle and other trigger factors such as stress and (lack of) exercise. We want to empower people to take better control of their health so they can lead fulfilling, active lives.
“People taking part in the workshops will be actively encouraged to learn new cooking methods while free blood pressure and blood sugar tests will also be available to them.”
Primarily targeting the over 50s, Reversing Diabetes hopes to raise awareness of the condition and the range of dangers it poses.
“There is a projection stating that a third of children born after 2002 will die before their parents through type 2 diabetes,” said Paul Haworth from Seventh-Day.
“This is staggering. To think that people are, presently, living longer than they ever have, we are going to see this reversed and very soon too. It’s no wonder our Government has put a tax on sugar.
“Not only could these Reversing Diabetes workshops help you they could help your children and grandchildren. We look forward to seeing you there.”
Reversing Diabetes starts at Perry Common Community Hall on Witton Lodge Road, Birmingham at 2pm on Wednesday September 4.
For each of the eight weeks sessions will tackle a different aspect of the condition, as follows:
1. Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
2. Sugar
3. Carbohydrates and Leptin
4. Fats in Perspective
5. Proteins that Heal
6. Oxidative Stress and Inflammation
7. Epigenetics / Numbers and Diabetes
8. Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle
