A united approach to energising the much-loved Wyrley Birch estate saw residents join local agencies for the first in a series of public walkabouts.

Organised by The Friends of Wyrley Birch to engage with the local community, representatives from Witton Lodge Community Association, Urban Devotion and Spurgeons took to the streets alongside Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Police.

During the walkabout the group spoke to residents about the type of help and support needed by people who live on the estate.

Flourishing Community Development Officer at Witton Lodge, Paul Tse, was among those who took part.

“This was the first event of its kind, a new way to engage with people and identify the needs they have,” he said.

“It is engagement with a purpose, to meet with residents and foster positive relationships with them so that the community itself is involved in facilitating pro-active, positive change.”

During the walkabout Paul described how the group were made aware of a range of issues affecting the estate including fly tipping, abandoned properties, litter, dog mess and anti-social behaviour.

“Talking to people on the estate gave us a clear understanding of what’s needed there,” added Paul.

“We are determined that our proactive approach in trying to eradicate the problems people are suffering will lead to positive, lasting resolutions.”
