Witton Lakes Eco Hub was transformed into a bustling nature reserve for aspiring scientists and ‘wildlife enthusiasts’ last Friday.

A special workshop, delivered as part of the worldwide City Nature Challenge 2026, gave local residents the chance to explore the biodiversity of Witton Lakes Park.

Closer to Nature

Our eager participants got involved in a variety of activities, including:

  • Unearthing the hidden beauty of the park like rare insects and flora.
  • Photographing the wildlife on Witton Lakes.
  • Using the iNaturalist app to upload photos to a national database.
  • Learning about the ecosystems around the park.

Photographing the plants, animals and insects at Witton Lakes provides data that will help conservationists track urban wildlife health on the site.

The event also gave people the chance to establish social and working connections with others as equally passionate and intrigued by the great outdoors.

Connecting people and places
Shane Wedderburn, Flourishing Communities Services Manager at WLCA , said: “At the Eco Hub, we see every day how powerful nature can be in bringing people together. The City Nature Challenge was a fantastic way for residents to connect with Witton Lakes Park, boost their wellbeing, and enjoy the nature around them. “
Huge thanks to all of the residents that joined us for this special nature challenge – we hope to see you at the Eco Hub again very soon! For details on all the activities currently taking place at Witton Lakes Eco Hub, call the team on 0121 227 3200 or click HERE.
