Today marks National Opportunity Day – a celebration of the idea that everyone deserves the chance to learn, grow and build a brighter future, no matter where they are in life.

The day shines a spotlight on lifelong learning and challenges outdated assumptions about who education and training are for. Whether it’s a school leaver exploring their next steps, someone returning to work after a career break, or a professional looking for a fresh start, National Opportunity Day reminds us that opportunity should be accessible to everyone.

It also highlights the many different pathways to success. From apprenticeships and vocational qualifications to technical learning, work-based training and adult education, there are more ways than ever for people to gain new skills, build confidence and unlock their potential.

At Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA), creating opportunities isn’t something we celebrate on just one day – it’s at the heart of what we do every day.

For more than 30 years, we’ve worked alongside residents, local communities and partner organisations to remove barriers to employment, develop skills and help people achieve their ambitions. We know that meaningful employment can transform lives, strengthening families, boosting confidence and creating more resilient communities.

Hundreds of local residents have benefited from our employment and skills programmes, designed to help people take their next step towards work, training or self-employment. Waheed Saleem, Head of Programmes and Partnership at WLCA, said: “Over the last five years, WLCA has worked with hundreds of local residents through highly successful employment and skills initiatives. A recent example was the WOW! (World of Work) Employment Programme specifically aimed at 18-21 year olds which provided practical, tailored support including confidence-building coaching and one-to-one guidance to help young residents work towards their goals.

In addition, our regular, large-scale jobs fairs continue to directly bridge the gap between job seekers and local employers.  Waheed Saleem, Head of Programmes and Partnerships at WLCA, said:

“Witton Lodge has also championed local economic growth by leading the North Birmingham Social Enterprise Cluster and through a targeted Social Enterprise Support Programme, we delivered expert-led workshops, mentoring, and sustainable business planning to local entrepreneurs.

“This dedicated training successfully equipped aspiring entrepreneurs and community groups with the vital tools, funding advice, and pitching skills needed to launch resilient, socially-driven ventures. Whether you are looking for your very first job, switching careers or ready to set yourself up in business, our employment and enterprise team work tirelessly to help people unlock their potential.”
