Community Digs in For Trees
More than 100 school pupils, volunteers and local residents gathered at Perry Common Recreation Ground to help plant 1,500 saplings in support of Birmingham Trees for Life.
With the sun shining children from St Margaret Mary’s RC School and St Bernadette’s Catholic School got to work with their spades to unearth a new chapter in conservation for Perry Common – supported by Witton Lodge Community Association.
Project Manager, Jane Harding, said: “We aim to spread the message that trees do matter. They improve the landscape and contribute to our overall health and well-being as well as reducing pollution and flooding.”
Wednesday’s event involved children from St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary (61 pupils and four teachers), St Margaret Mary Catholic Primary (44 children and 6 adults) and Oasis Academy in Short Heath (48 children plus 20 adults). They were accompanied by eight Birmingham University students and 13 Deutsche bankers (funders of the project).
“The sapling trees were planted in very stony, difficult ground but it was a fantastic effort from everyone who took part and supported us,” added Jane.
Communications Officer at Witton Lodge Community Association, Steve Sharma, attended the event alongside the Association’s Chair, Linda Hines MBE.
“It was lovely to be involved and to see so many children and members of the community rally together for such a worthy cause,” said Steve.
