Volunteers planting trees in Witton Lakes

Volunteers brave the rainy weather to plant new trees

April, 2018: A group of volunteers starting their careers at PriceWaterhouseCoopers came along and enjoyed a rewarding day of hard work down at Witton Lakes in Perry Common, Birmingham.

The group of young starters at the business auditing group got the chance to bond over their tasks in the stunning natural environment of the Lakes. To many, it was the perfect start to their working life: building their teamworking skills and getting to appreciate the importance of our natural community spaces.

Throughout the day, and despite the rather bleak weather, they planted 25 new trees, ensuring the continued natural beauty of Witton Lakes long into the future. The planting locations and activities were overseen by Gareth Jones, Birmingham City Council’s Tree Officer for the area.

The volunteers were coordinated by the ‘Friends of Witton Lakes’, who take on an active role in the upkeep and wellbeing of the lakes and surrounding park. Linda Hines MBE, chair of the Friends group, was out with the volunteers and said: “It’s wonderful to see the joy and happiness that this activity has brought to everyone involved. Volunteering is an important and essential activity, and our local parks and open spaces rely on everyone’s contribution to keep them in good condition.”

The group of approximately 40 volunteers also got to see the Velvet Community Orchard at Witton Lakes, which was opened in 2009 in association with Velvet Toilet Tissue, and is an environmental space kept up almost exclusively by local volunteers.
