Quitting smoking is a tough battle. The struggle isn’t just about overcoming your nicotine cravings; it’s about rewiring deeply ingrained habits. Relieving stress and overcoming boredom are two of the main reasons people light up.

Break the Habit is our FREE smoking cessation programme that offers six-weeks of tailored support to help you end your dependency. It’s easy to register and participants will receive FREE nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) and a stop smoking support pack that includes a special sensory aid to help deal with cravings.

Taking control of your future

And if you’re determined to quit, there are small and simple steps you can take yourself to help you along the way.

Physical activity is always great medicine.  And as far as smoking goes, exercise offers a powerful, healthy and immediate alternative to reaching for a cigarette.

If stress is a smoking trigger for you then a quick 10-minute workout can dramatically shift your focus. Yoga emphasises breath control and can mimic the breathing ritual of puffing on a cigarette. It will calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Walking: The simple act of stepping outside can be revolutionary. Smokers often use the cigarette to mark a transition; the end of a meal, the start of a break or taking a break from work. If you can replace this habit with a brisk walk it can help break your mental associations with smoking. In addition, walking releases endorphins, the brain’s natural mood enhancers which counter the low mood that can often accompany nicotine withdrawal.

Cycling: The focused, rhythmic motion of pedalling requires concentration, making it impossible to smoke while you’re doing it. Cycling is powerful cardio workout that improves your lung capacity. As you cycle further or faster your body is creating a positive feedback loop which becomes a health, enjoyable alternative to nicotine.

Feel good about a positive step

Engaging in such activities on a regular basis can help build a healthier foundation for life after nicotine. They provide an instant distraction and an outlet for stress, lifting your mood and creating a focus on feeling good.

At the Witton Lakes Eco Hub we deliver regular Yoga sessions alongside organised walks and bike rides around the park. Click HERE to view the Hub’s weekly schedule of activities and how you can take part.

Stopping smoking is hard but using exercise can get you there if you start small, be kind to yourself and let movement lead you to freedom.
