Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA) takes its responsibilities as an employer very seriously, particularly the welfare of its staff.

This is why, during the year, employees are enrolled onto training courses which can benefit both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Recently, a number of colleagues and WLCA volunteers took part in First Aid training delivered by Annette Henry, on behalf of the Training at Work Group.

During the session they learned how to recognise potential dangers and were instructed on how to provide immediate care for burns, bleeding and choking and perform life-saving techniques like CPR.

Welfare Benefits Caseworker,  Claire Gray attended the training.

“The training was informative and enjoyable,” she said. “The trainer used humour, which made it flow really well.”

Wellbeing Officer, John Faber, also took part. He said: The training was informative and interesting. Annette was engaging and knowledgeable. There were lots of practical exercises which helped increase my confidence in delivering First Aid. This First Aid training was one of the best I’ve experienced.”

Housekeeper Sharon Haden, who previously volunteered for Witton Lodge and still works as a Befriender, also commented: “The course was very well set out the trainer explained things well and had some humour to the  exercises that we had to complete.”

Theresa Senior, has been volunteering for Witton Lodge for more than nine years added: “I thought the training was very good. A lot of topics were covered, for example, CPR, different types of injuries and conditions that you might come across,  what to put and what not to put in a First Aid Box, the protocol when approaching an injured person before performing any treatment etc.

“We got the opportunity to do practical exercises, in pairs/small groups. So we practiced the CPR on a dummy, putting each other in a recovery position, putting bandages on each other for different types of injuries.
“I thought the tutor, Annette, was also very good, very knowledgeable. I liked the way she delivered the course, there was a bit of humour mixed in. She did demonstrations of the practical exercises before we did them and she also showed us how to use a defibrillator on a dummy.
We got to do a short test at the end of the training, I think it was 15 questions, based on we learnt and best of all, we were given this beautiful brochure covering everything we learnt, so we don’t have to remember it all!

Debbie Bates, Operations Lead at Witton Lodge, arranged for the training to take place.

She said: First Aid in the workplace is crucial as it equips employees with the skills they will need to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations, potentially saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries.

“This training also helps the organisation fulfill its legal obligations for workplace safety.

“Annette was extremely professional and personable, delivering an engaging and fun session on a serious subject.”
