Lord Mayor Bowled Over at Centenary Celebration
The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zafar Iqbal, was well and truly bowled over during a community fun day held to celebrate the centenary of one of Erdington’s most popular sports clubs.
Cllr Iqbal was one of many attending Monday’s Family Fun and Have a Go at Bowls Day at Erdington Court Bowls Club which offered people of all ages the chance to enjoy its lush green facilities and marvel at a special exhibition charting the history and growth of the organisation.
With over 150 members, the club delivers a range of services to integrate people into the sport and provide wellbeing support to older residents and those with learning difficulties and complex medical needs.
A number of these activities are funded through the Erdington Neighbourhood Network Scheme (ENNS) which is managed by Witton Lodge Community Association in partnership with Compass Support.
Club Director, Ray Woods, said: “The Lord Mayor embodies the spirit of a true Brummie. This was his first visit to the club and he said he loved it. He spoke to club players and had a go on the greens himself.”
Other groups who turned out to support the event included the Parkinson’s Support Group, Erdington Litter Busters, the Erdington Walking Group, Trinity Photographic Club and Aston Unity Cricket Club.
