Erdington Residents Needed For Volunteering
Learn new skills, boost your employability, improve your wellbeing and help people facing difficulty – this is the message being targeted at residents to support a recruitment drive for new volunteers across Erdington.
Since the start of the Covid19 lockdown, more than 240 people have volunteered their time and effort to lead the response in the district to provide support services to those individuals and families suffering the impact of the pandemic.
But as lockdown restrictions have eased and people have returned to work, the number of volunteers has dropped and some services such as food distribution are stopping.
However, Rob Netherway, Flourishing Community Services Manager at Witton Lodge Community Association, said there remains a wealth of volunteering opportunities that people can take part in; activities which benefit both the individual and the organisation offering the role, as well as the local community.
“The main activity carried out by volunteers during lockdown has been delivering food parcels, essential supplies and providing befriending support,” he said.
“And while these services are still necessary there are many other roles people can participate in to further their volunteering experience and continue supporting their communities, especially as more activities re-open.
“Volunteering is as much about helping yourself as it is about helping others. It provides a real sense of personal achievement and can really improve confidence and self-esteem. You develop new skills, meet new people and make new friends.”
Working with partners including Erdington Community Volunteers and Urban Devotion Birmingham, a range of new roles are being created and recruited for including digital support, befriender and litter pickers, while people are also needed to help organise sporting activities, community events and carry out gardening tasks.
