Targeting those areas of Erdington where the need is greatest – that was the central focus for members attending the latest meeting of the Erdington Neighbourhood Network Scheme (NNS).

Hosted by Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA) at Perry Common Community Hall, this week’s event – attended by organisations like Erdington NNS partner Compass Support, Birmingham City Council,  Birmingham Voluntary Services Council, Locality and John Taylor Hospice – heard how a number of approved applications are now ready to launch activities in the constituency; activities and support services which help older residents reduce isolation, promote positive health and wellbeing and encourage active participation in their community.

Chief Officer at WLCA, Afzal Hussain, said it has been a very positive start for the scheme, which was officially launched in September.

“The ultimate aim is to help people live independent and connected lives,” he said.

Erdington NNS is a constituency-based network of community, voluntary and social enterprise organisations who will enable engagement with those organisations and individuals who can provide support and activities which older people can benefit from.”

Lead organisations Witton Lodge Community Association and Compass Support are working with partners and supporters to cultivate a support network of agencies and establish a portfolio of resources which can deliver the solutions older people require to overcome challenges like poor physical and emotional health.

Individuals and groups can apply for funding to establish activities and support services which benefit the health and wellbeing of older people living in the constituency under the scheme’s Small Grants Programme.

Funding of between £250 and £10,000 is available, depending on the scope of the proposed activity.
