There was a collective sense of pride at Perry Common Community Hall on Tuesday as Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA) hosted a landmark celebration to mark a triumph for youth employment, social entrepreneurship and volunteering.

With more than 70 guests in attendance, the event was presided over by Erdington MP Paulette Hamilton and recognised three pillars of growth that are reshaping the North Birmingham landscape.

Empowering the Next Generation

The WOW! (World of Work) initiative has been a gamechanger for local youth, providing tailored support to help people aged 18-21 years of age to break down barriers to employment. By equipping them with both practical skills and the confidence to lead, WOW! has paved the way for candidates to secure meaningful, long-term roles.

Innovation with a Heart

The celebration event also honoured our latest cohort of aspiring entrepreneurs. Over the last five months, these visionary men and women have navigated Witton Lodge’s Social Enterprise programme. From creative startups to new Community Interest Companies (CICs), their business models aren’t just about profit, they are designed to tackle local social issues head-on.

“Seeing the diverse range of business pitches was truly inspiring,” said Marcia Lewis, Employment and Enterprise Advisor at WLCA. “They’ve shown a unique blend of business acumen and a deep commitment to social good.”

The Backbone of Resilience

No celebration of North Birmingham would be complete without recognising our incredible volunteers. Whether running projects or providing peer support, our volunteers remain the backbone of our community’s resilience.

WLCA Chair Linda Hines MBE paid a moving tribute to these local heroes.

“Our volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do,” she commented. “Their selflessness ensures that no-one in North Birmingham has to walk their path alone.”

A Blueprint for Success

As certificates were presented, Paulette Hamilton MP emphasised the power of collaboration and how cohesive community support is the driving force for progress.

“Investing in young people is investing in the future,” she said. “Witton Lodge has a proud history of supporting local communities to develop talent so that people can become the best they an be.”

In closing the event, Afzal Hussain, Chief Officer at WLCA, captured the spirit of the day perfectly: When a community invests in its own people, everyone thrives. The success of the WOW! graduates and the vision of our new social entrepreneurs serve as a powerful blueprint for the future.

“Congratulations to all our achievers! Together, we are building a stronger, brighter North Birmingham.”
