We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our remarkable volunteer, Denis Chalk and send love and prayers to his family at this sad time. Denis was a wonderful volunteer with Witton Lodge Community Association and we are honoured to share the remarkable legacy he has left in our community.

At 96 years old, Denis proved that age is no barrier to making a difference. Denis joined Witton Lodge as a volunteer in September 2024 and ran a weekly chess club at Witton Lakes Eco Hub – a space that has quickly become a favourite for chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. His passion for the game and dedication to sharing it with others quickly turned the club into a thriving community hub.

A Life Full of Stories

Born in Handsworth, Birmingham during the war, Denis faced challenges early in life, losing his mother when he was just eight months old. At 14, he joined the Fire Service and served as an Air Raid Warden Messenger during the war, running messages from HQ to wardens’ posts in Warstock. These experiences shaped Denis into the resilient and resourceful man we were honoured to meet in 2024.

After dedicating his life to work and raising his family, Denis discovered renewed purpose during a visit to Witton Lodge Eco Hub. When he mentioned his love for chess, the team eagerly encouraged him to launch a club – and, as they say, the rest is history.

A Passion for Chess

Denis learned to play chess in his 50s and developed a deep love for the game. His enthusiasm was infectious, inspiring players young and old to join the club and along with his charm and storytelling skills, Denis created an inclusive environment where chess masters and beginners alike could connect, learn, and grow.

King of The Community

Witton Lodge was proud to have Denis as part of its volunteer team. His weekly chess club continues to bring joy to residents and fosters intergenerational connections within the community. Denis’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of finding new purpose later in life.

Thank You, Denis

At Witton Lakes Eco Hub, community spirit and shared interests go hand in hand. Denis’s legacy of contribution not only promoted strategic thinking and friendly competition but also strengthened bonds within the community. We are proud to continue the chess club in his honour, so whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious beginner, everyone is welcome.

Denis’s story reminds us that it’s never too late to make a positive impact. His dedication to sharing his passion for chess has enriched lives at Witton Lakes Eco Hub and beyond, making him a much-loved figure in our community. We miss you Denis and want to thank you for your incredible contributions – you will always be a true inspiration and we are proud to continue your legacy through Denis’s Chess Club – a fitting tribute for a wonderful man.
