Dwayne’s Story: How WLCA is Helping Him Build His Business
We recently spoke with Dwayne, a jobseeker and participant in the Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA) Social Enterprise Programme, at our January 2025 Jobs Fair. Dwayne’s story is a great example of how WLCA’s initiatives are empowering local entrepreneurs.
Dwayne shared how the Social Enterprise Programme is providing him with valuable support and advice as he works to establish his own business, Garment Growth Consultancy, a specialised niche start-up, offering tailored marketing solutions for independent menswear brands. Dwayne has worked through various stages of establishing his business including research and evaluation and has spent time improving his skills, recently achieving Level 3 Certificate in Digital Marketing Business Principles.
Dwayne said about the SE Programme: “It’s been great to help me think about launching my business and Ricky, who leads the weekly sessions, has really opened my eyes to so much that can help grow my brand.
“Other support I’ve received is quite remote and I wanted hands-on, face to face support so this has been really valuable to have in-person sessions and connect with other members of the programme. Witton Lodge has helped me focus on next steps and helped me network more to build my connections.”
Dwayne learnt about our recent Jobs Fair through WLCA Employment and Enterprise Advisor, Marcia Lewis and his involvement with the SE Programme, highlighting the interconnectedness of WLCA’s initiatives that can truly benefit residents.
Dwayne’s experience underscores the importance of the Enterprise Support Programme, which runs until March 2025 and aims to nurture the growth of social enterprises and community groups in North Birmingham. Participants benefit from informative workshops, excellent networking opportunities, and collaboration prospects. This initiative works alongside our Employment & Skills delivery and is part of WLCA’s active involvement in the North Birmingham Economic Recovery (NB:ER) Board, working to revitalise the local economy.
