Funding Appeal to Support NHS Keyworkers
A group of 510 sewing and driving volunteers are aiming to raise £5,000 to purchase the materials needed to continue supplying PPE scrubs for NHS keyworkers.
Protective uniforms are in short supply throughout hospitals across the country, prompting the creation of the ‘For the Love of Scrubs’ UK wide initiative and Facebook group. The project began two weeks ago and has spread far and wide amongst many willing volunteers, resulting in several regionalised sub-groups setting up and down the country.
Chanel Morrison-Jolley, co-ordinator of the West Midlands project, liaises and is contacted by NHS Hospital Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups who are urgently requesting scrubs so staff can protect themselves, while tending to patients with coronavirus.
She manages 510 volunteer sewist and drivers via the ‘For the Love of Scrubs – Birmingham Sub-group Facebook group, where she distributes the information of how many uniforms are needed. Volunteers work to design the items required and deliver uniforms to hospitals in line with government guidelines.
Chanel said: “There is a real need for us to pull together and help the NHS. We have an amazing team of volunteers who are helping to create the materials needed for protective uniform, but we need more support in the form of donations. We need help affording materials, which is where the public can make a big difference.”
Many fabric and textile businesses are willing to provide fabric at a discounted rate; however, a lack of funds will stop the operations in its tracks. The group is now calling on the public to help raise funds so they can purchase and create the 1500 and growing number of much-needed scrubs.
