A new Digital Literacy initiative is helping senior citizens in Perry Common to lead more active and independent lives

Witton Lodge Community Association has launched weekly sessions for residents at Sycamore Court, its extra-care sheltered housing scheme. The idea is to boost users capabilities with technology so they can access support services which benefit them.

Paul Tse, Flourishing Community Development Officer for Witton Lodge, is running the classes.

“In today’s world, being digital literate is crucial, especially for older people who are becoming more dependent on technology to access those services which assist their daily lives,” he said.

“That’s why it is important to find ways to help them develop an understanding of digital platforms and then acquire the skills they need to use those platforms in ways which benefit them.

“Older people can struggle to use the Internet-based services that a lot of organisations and public agencies now use. Knowing how to use technology to access information around things like health, finance and utilities can make the world of difference to people and give them the confidence to lead more independent, fulfilling lives.”
