RADAR Keys are part of the National Key Scheme and provide tens of thousands of UK residents living with a disability or a serious health condition access to locked public disabled toilets.
The scheme, launched in the 1980s, was initiated to protect public disabled toilets from being vandalised or misused, ensuring those who required access to use them could do so safely, and at their convenience.
There are more than 400 local authorities across country which have adopted the scheme, as well as many public, voluntary and commercial organisations; such as shopping centres, pubs, cafés, department stores, country parks, railway and bus stations, airports, motorway services and sports venues.
And now, Witton Lodge Community Association is making RADAR keys available to people living in North Birmingham by becoming an official stockist of genuine RADAR Keys.
Health and Wellbeing Lead, Debbie Bates, said: “Disabled toilets are big, private and less likely to be occupied, making them potentially vulnerable to misuse by the general public. It is for this reason that the toilets are securely locked. Being able to supply these keys will ensure that people who need to use accessible toilets can do so discreetly and independently without having to ask or wait for someone else to give them access”.
Each key is made of solid brass and are extremely durable and are now available from Witton Lodge Community Association at a cost of £3.00 each. In order to purchase one of these from Witton Lodge Community Association you must satisfy certain criteria, namely:
- You must have a mental or physical disability which is helped by using the key to access the specialist features available in accessible or Changing Places toilets.
- You must provide evidence that you have a disability.
