The first Greater Birmingham Community-Led Housing Network event of the year was held on the 30th January 2018 with great success. Hosted by Witton Lodge Community Association, the event was well attended by a vast array of community groups and organisations from across the city and wider region.
The focus of the event was to enable community groups or organisations to gain a better understanding of community-led housing (CLH) schemes; how CLH can be the key to unlocking other neighbourhood services and gauging interest in the future of a CLH network.
Highlights included inspiring and informative talks from nine key speakers:
Lyn Kesterton – Caro Support “Overview of Policy”
Rose Seagrief – Power to Change “Overview of Policy”
Guy Chaundy & Karen Cheney – Birmingham City Council “Role of the Local Authority”
Cheryl Dockery – Pioneer Group / SGOHT “Working with Housing Associations”
Linda Hines – “The Witton Lodge Experience”
David Alcock – Antony Collins “Legal Structures”
Ed Ingram – Unity Trust Bank “Financing Your Scheme”
Afzal Hussain – Witton Lodge Community Association “Towards a Network”
There was also an exciting discussion around developing a Community-Led Housing Network in Birmingham. This explored what the purpose of a network should be; what it should do; how a network would be most helpful; and how groups and individuals would like to be part of a Community-Led Housing Network. A summary of insights gathered can be viewed here: Towards a Network Discussion – Feedback and Insights
