 /

At Witton Lodge Community Association, we demonstrate the profound impact a community-led organisation can have on local social value. Through our diverse range of services and initiatives, we address critical needs in housing, employment, health, and community development to help nurture a strong, supportive community network.

We aim to not only improve the lives of individual residents but also contribute to the overall resilience and prosperity of the Erdington and wider North Birmingham area. We are delighted to share a snapshot of the social value and achievements we have made between 2023 and 2024.

Background

Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA) is a vital community anchor organisation that has been serving communities across Erdington since 1994. Originally established in response to the planned demolition of over 900 houses, WLCA has grown into a multifaceted organisation that delivers significant social value to its community through various initiatives and services.

Housing and Community Development

WLCA owns and manages over 200 homes for social and market rent, including a 40-apartment Independent Living Scheme called Sycamore Court. This provision of affordable housing is crucial for maintaining a stable and diverse community in Erdington. By offering a range of housing options, from 1-bedroom apartments to 4-bedroom homes, WLCA ensures that residents of different ages and family sizes can find suitable accommodation within their community.

Employment and Skills Support

One of the key areas where WLCA creates social value is through its employment and skills services. The association provides:

– Job search assistance

– CV and application form support

– Skills development programs

– Advice for those considering self-employment

These services are particularly valuable for first-time job seekers, long-term unemployed individuals, and those looking to advance their careers. By helping local residents improve their employability, WLCA contributes to reducing unemployment and increasing economic stability in the area.

Health and Wellbeing Initiatives

WLCA places a strong emphasis on promoting health and wellbeing within the community. They offer:

– Mental health support activities

– Fitness initiatives

– Social prescribing

– Benefits advice and guidance service

– Energy efficiency support

– Vital befriending service to support those alone or isolated

These services are delivered through group sessions and one-on-one support, ensuring that community members have access to resources that can significantly improve their quality of life.

Environmental Projects

WLCA delivers and supports several environmental projects aimed at helping people live healthier lives. These initiatives not only improve the local environment but also provide opportunities for community engagement and education about sustainable living practices.

Community Engagement

WLCA works collaboratively with local partners to host a wide range of community events and activities. These events foster social cohesion, reduce isolation, and create a sense of belonging among residents. They provide platforms for cultural exchange, skill-sharing, and intergenerational interaction.

We launched Community Voice in 2024 to amplify the voices of residents across North Birmingham and play an important role in shaping the services that impact their lives.

Community Voice serves as an inclusive platform for residents of North Birmingham to share their experiences and influence local decision-making. Welcoming individuals of all ages, ethnicities, and abilities, the forum aims to gather insights on critical community issues and enhance service delivery across key themes such as housing, employment, health, enterprise, environment, and volunteering.

Erdington Neighbourhood Network Scheme (ENNS)

WLCA, in partnership with Compass Support, leads the Erdington Neighbourhood Network Scheme. This initiative supports older adults and younger adults with registered needs to live independent and connected lives.

– Distributes funding to local organisations

– Facilitates the creation of support networks

– Promotes activities that reduce isolation

– Reinforces good health and wellbeing practices

In 2023/24, we expanded our community support initiatives by not only managing the Erdington Neighbourhood Network Scheme (ENNS) but also by administering the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Small Grants Programme. Through this programme, we distributed grants of up to £10,000 to community and voluntary groups operating within the Erdington Constituency. Our efforts resulted in a substantial investment of over £45o,000in local community initiatives and group events, significantly boosting grassroots activities and social engagement in the area.

Energy Advice Services

Witton Lodge Community Association is committed to supporting residents live better during the cost-of-living crisis. We offer free energy advice services to help residents save money and reduce their environmental impact. Our qualified Energy Advisors offer support on:

– Understanding energy bills

– Addressing debt issues

– Improving home energy efficiency

– Changing energy suppliers

– Providing energy-saving tips

Social Economy Leadership

A recognised leader in the social economy sector,  in 2023 WLCA was selected to lead a Social Enterprise Cluster as part of a £2 million support package from the West Midlands Combined Authority. This initiative aims to level up disadvantaged neighbourhoods and create sustainable ecosystems for social organisations.

Contntinuing to build on the momentum of social economy leadership, we are spearheading the transformation of the former Erdington Baths into the Erdington Enterprise Hub, a £4 million project that will provide a vibrant space for local entrepreneurs, businesses, and community members. This ambitious endeavor not only preserves a cherished local landmark but also creates a much-needed catalyst for economic growth and community empowerment in Erdington.
