A young Erdington woman, beset by social anxiety, starts an apprenticeship in Web Development next month thanks to the employment support she received from Witton Lodge Community Association.

In April this year, Louise McGough approached us for help finding work. Over the last four-months, Engagement and Support Worker, Dellano Lewis, has mentored the 20-year-old to overcome the barriers that were preventing her from securing a job.

So now, having mastered her unease around large crowds and crowded spaces, Louise is looking forward with new hope and confidence.

“I really enjoyed my time working with Witton Lodge,” she said. “The support I got from Dellano has really helped to raise my confidence. I am excited about the future.”

Having been introduced to Witton Lodge by her work coach Karen, Louise required support in various aspects of employment, especially with her job search capabilities, creating and distributing a CV and interview skills.

“We discussed and planned weekly one-to-one sessions, via Zoom initially,” said Dellano.

“Our sessions together lasted 45 mins. Louise was punctual and attended all the online sessions. After the first six-week she felt confident about moving forward into work as her interview skills, job searching and CV writing all improved significantly.”

Louise expressed an interest to work in the field of Information Technology. With Dellano’s help, an approach was made to the Northern Training Academy; an organisation which specialises in placing people into roles within the sector.

“She was introduced to the company and enrolled on a 10-week training programme covering Work Preparation skills, English and Maths and functional skills,” added Dellano.

“Louise has also learned about Occupational Standards including Health & Safety, Safeguarding and additional elements appropriate to IT. She has excelled on the course and has been granted a space on a web development apprenticeship, starting in September.”
